This was a bottle sent to me by Chris over at BeerGeekNation. BeerAdvocate lists this as an English Barleywine, but given that it's been aged in oak I think it's fairer to consider it a particularly potent old ale. Either way it's an excellent brew, one that I hope to be able to get again soon.

Brooklyn Monster Ale 2009

I had a bottle of this before I left for Prague, but decided to review it after Youtube beertuber MasterOfHoppets drank a 2005 bottling while I was out of country. I'm more of a fan of the hoppier, bolder American-style barleywines, but this one is quite a nice example of the English tradition, even if it's made in Brooklyn.

This ended up being a very short mini-review, partly due to technical issues and partly because I just didn't have a lot to say about this beer, as good as it is. These shorts ones are easier to shoot, edit, and upload, so I may be using that format a little bit more often for stuff that I've had quite a bit before.

Beer Review, Cereal Killer
Arcadia Ales Cereal Killer Barleywine
Gotta love the fact that this is now a local beer for me.
Appearance: Very hazy brown-yellow appearance, small off-white head. Hints of effervescence due to carbonation. 4.0/5
Smell: Very tart up-front, almost lambic-like in its fruitiness, Hints of cherries. Very interesting, very unexpected for a barleywine (even an English barleywine). Hops are fairly well present under that, with quite a bit of alcohol astringency. 3.5/5
Taste: Very malty, quite sweet, slightly tarty. Alcohol very present in the flavor, mostly masked by the malts, with a burningly dry finish and a sweet aftertaste. 3.5/5
Mouthfeel: Thick, with low carbonation and high hops. Coats the tongue. 4.0/5
Drinkability: I'm not always a fan of English-style barleywines, but this one is quite good. Worth a try, and at $7.99 a bomber the price is right. 4.0/5
